For more than three decades, Javier Vidal and his Tejano Musical brothers has been performing as a part of the Tejano band Grupo Vidal. After 10 albums and countless live performances, the band received its first-ever Latin Grammy Award nomination in September for Best Tejano Album with their 2018 release, “Nunca Te Rindas.”

Tejano Musical brothers Honored by Tejano Roots Hall of Fame

“This is the first time we’ve ever gotten nominated for anything. Outside of being recognized for our longevity by the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame a few years back,” first singer and bajo sexto player Javier Vidal said. “And just to be nominated is a win in itself.”

Vidal said the group has had several name changes throughout the years, but the heart of the group has always remained the same with Tejano musical brothers Javier, Rudy, Ronnie and Daniel performing together.

Ramon Ayala born (December 8th. 1945) in Monterrey, Mexico has mastered the artistry accordionist/vocalist/songwriter for over 40 years. Ramon Ayala has defined norteño music with signature songs and definitive instrumental styling that have made him a superstar on both sides of the El Rio Grande.

Ramon, son of local musician Ramon Cobarrubias, began playing his favorite instrument, the accordion when he was six years old. Inspired and supported by his parents, he performed in different public places to help his modest family. His first band experience was a group called Los Jilgueros de Marin, later he joined Los Pavorreales.

As a teenager in the early sixties, Ramon virtually invented modern conjunto music, teaming up with the late bajo sexto guitarist / vocalist Cornelio Reyna to form Los Relampagos del Norte, the duo forged a distinctive sound and compiled a roster of songs that have since been covered by countless artists in contemporary Latin music. Their first hit single “Ya no llores” was recorded in 1963. For the next eight years, Los Relampagos del Norte tore up the music charts by revolutionizing and re-inventing norteño music, a genre that was then considered exclusively cantina music. Ramon and Cornelio livened the music and lyrics in order to reach and appeal to more people.

The talented duo recorded a total of 20 albums leaving behind many classics such as “El disgusto”, “Devolucion”, “Mi Tesoro”, “Tengo miedo”, and many others. After Cornelio Reyna left to pursue his own ranchero career in 1971, Ramon Ayala set out to prove that he could make it on his own and formed the legendary band, Ramon Ayala y sus Bravos del Norte in late 1971. Early next year Ramon was growing and already making a name for himself with his new vocalist, Antonio Sauceda.

Changes were yet to come, Antonio Sauceda showed a renewed interest in Christianity and decided to join a Christian seminary, this time Eliseo Robles joined the band, leaving behind the Satellite’s de Fidencio Ayala (Ramon’s brother). Together, Ramon and Eliseo, forged a partnership that artistically surpassed all others and that to this day still remains as the premier perfection of the genre. They created a style that became the standard for norteño music.

During the Eliseo Robles years, Ramon Ayala y sus Bravos del Norte’s album sales reached peak high in Mexico and the United States with hits such as: “Un rinconcito en el cielo”, “Chaparra de mi amor”, “Tragos amargos” and many others. In the mid-80’s Ramon found himself again without a lead singer. Ego problems from Eliseo caused him to leave the band. Antonio Coronado became the fourth lead singer but although it looked like it was going to be a successful add, the same ego problems appeared and he only recorded 8 albums with the group. In 1993 was the arrival of the 5th and current lead singer, Mario Marichalar who brought a new style to the band, appealing to a younger generation. However, Ramon continues to be a classic singer who is remembered as one of the founders of the modern norteño music. Ramon has won and has been nominated for several Grammy awards. In 2001 Ramon was awarded with an American Grammy award for the album “En Vivo… El Hombre Y Su Musica”.

Ramon has also been awarded with two Latin Grammys’ for the albums “Quemame Los Ojos” and “ El Numero Cien”. Ramon has been nominated for a total of ten times with both markets combined. Among the awards and recognitions he had received we can find: Mr. Amigo in Brownsville, TX. “La Diosa Musical” for his high sales, “Llaves de Cristal” in Monterrey, gold and platinum albums. His sales keep and average of 750,000 units per year. Ramon’s performances range from 120 to 150 in both markets. He has more than 105 albums in his trajectory and he also took part in 13 movies, sharing credits with talents such as: Antonio Aguilar, Los Hermanos Almada and Cornelio Reyna among others. Ramon Ayala’s influence on modern music cannot be overstated, as most norteño groups today use their style as their musical foundation to perform their songs. In sum, Ramon is one of the most memorable iconic super stars today. Ramon Ayala y sus Bravos del Norte are: Ramon Ayala, Fidencio Ayala, Jose Luis Ayala, Mario Marichalar, David Laure y Raul Rosales.

Los Garcia Brothers are known for their “pachuco” style (colorful zoot suits and feathered fedoras) and rhythmic conjunto sound. Started in 1990 in Eagle Pass by Jimmy Garcia, the group’s successful albums included hit songs like “Dos Carnales,” “El Pachuco,” “El Cometa” and their breakout hit, “Cuatro Paredes.” They took home the 2001 Album of the Year Award in the conjunto category at the Annual Tejano Music Awards and named the Most Promising Band. The following year, the Tejano Music Awards once again awarded Los Garcia Brothers with the Conjunto Album of the Year before the untimely death of their 27-year-old founder in a car crash. The Los Garcia Brothers name has continued as Jimmy’s brother, Joey Garcia, spearheads the group, and along with their father, Joe Garcia, continues recording the conjunto music that launched their family’s dream. Tejano conjunto is known for its electrifying polkas and cumbias that uniquely blend accordion music with the band’s outstanding saxophone and forceful percussion sections. In 2013, Los Garcia Brothers was inducted into the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame.

Her band Elida Reyna Y Avante, also known as Elida Y Avante (EYA), is a Latin Grammy Award winning Tejano band formed in the Rio Grande Valley in 1992. Their first two albums “Atrevete” (1994) and “Algo Entero” (1996) were qualified for gold status and produced the popular singles “Luna Llena”and “Lagrimas De Amor”. They were awarded “Billboard” Magazines “Revelacion Del Año” award, and were named “Rising Group of the Year” at the TTMA Industry Awards in 1995. Their 2010 album, “Fantasia”, earned them a Latin Grammy Award. Lead singer Elida Reyna was given a place in the “Tejano Roots Hall of Fame”.

She formed Elida Y Avante in 1992 in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. They released their first album Atrevete in 1994 under La Mafia’s label at the time, Voltage Entertainment. This album spawned the hit “Luna Llena” They received TTMA Industry Awards for “Rising Group of the Year” and “Rising Female Vocalist of the Year” in 1995. It went gold (denoting sales of at least 50,000 units), propelled by the hit single “Luna Llena” and Hernandez’s use of a stand-up bass to create a unique sound. Before they could enjoy their success, however, they were feuding with Voltage. Groups rarely leave a powerhouse like Voltage (with its major-label distribution) unless they’ve already lined up another company with comparable juice, so Elida y Avante shocked the industry by going out on its own. The group self-released one single and then did something nearly as shocking by signing in 1996 with unknown Tejas Records in San Antonio, which had released just one album—and a blues album at that. In 1996, Reyna won the TTMA Award for “Rising Female Star” and in 1997, she hosted the Pura Vida Awards. At the 1999 Tejano Music Awards, Elida Y Avante won “Most Promising Band of the Year”. In 2000 Reyna scored big with a Ranchera song entitled, “Duele”. At that years Tejano Music Awards, Reyna won “Female Vocalist of the Year”, “Female Entertainer of the Year”, & “Song of the Year”, with “Duele”. Reyna has since traveled the world, performing in Asia and Europe.

Sahm, better known as the founding member of the Sir Douglas Quintet, played with Jiménez for some time. Flaco then went on to New York City and worked with Dr. John, David Lindley, Peter Rowan, Ry Cooder and Bob Dylan. He appeared on Cooder’s world music album Chicken Skin Music and on the Rolling Stones‘ Voodoo Lounge. This led to greater awareness of his music outside America and, after touring Europe with Ry Cooder, he returned to tour in America with his own band, and on a joint bill with Peter Rowan. Jiménez, Peter Rowan and Wally Drogos were the original members of a band called the Free Mexican Airforce.

Jiménez won a Grammy award in 1986 for Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio, one of his father’s songs. He was also a member of the Tejano fusion group Texas Tornados,[4] with Augie Meyers, Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender. The Texas Tornados won a Grammy award in 1990, and Jiménez earned one on his own in 1996, when his album Flaco Jiménez won the Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance. In 1999, he earned another Grammy award for Best Tejano Performance for Said and Done (released by Barbed Wire Records) and one for Best Mexican-American Performance as a part of the supergroup Los Super Seven.

In 2012 Jiménez received a National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment of the Arts.[2][3]

In February 2015, Jiménez won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.[5] He also won a Best Video award at the Tejano Music Awards and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from Billboard Latin Magazine for “Streets of Bakersfield” with Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens.

Jiménez appeared in the movie Picking Up the Pieces, with Woody Allen and Sharon Stone, and was also featured on the soundtrack. His music has been featured in the soundtrack for other movies, such as Y Tu Mamá También, El Infierno, The Border, Tin Cup, Chulas Fronteras, and Striptease. The Hohner company collaborated with Jiménez to create the Flaco Jimenez Signature Series of accordions.

His brother, Santiago Jiménez, Jr., is also an accomplished accordionist and has recorded extensively.

Born Stefani Barela Sullivan in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she made her full-length album debut at age nine with Angel Baby, a pop effort that was reissued in 2008. Years later, she was offered a major-label recording contract with Sony Music. Known then as simply Stefani, she released five albums in association with the label: Te Voy Enamorar (1994), Todo Mi Amor (1995), Porque Soy Mujer (1997), Baila Conmigo (1998), and Dulce Sensacion (1999), the latter of which was her first released as Stefani Montiel. After the turn of the century, Montiel signed with the independent label World Records. Her third full-length release on World Records, Divina (2009), was her most successful album in years, spawning a couple singles (“Labios Venenosos,” “Sigo Enamorada”) and earning her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Tejano Album.

One of the most celebrated Tejano/conjunto groups of their era, the Hometown Boys started out as a family band and went on to become one of the most popular conjunto acts in the Southwest, despite a sad history of personal loss. Based in Lubbock, Texas, the Hometown Boys’ story began in the ’50s, when Roman Martinez, Sr., a talented bajo sexto player, married his girlfriend Maria Dolores, who was also his bandmate in a popular local group, Madrugadores del Valle. As the Martinez family grew, Roman and Maria discovered their children were also gifted musicians, and in time the parents and their six children formed a band, el Grupo Internacional de Ricky y Joe Martinez. The group had an eclectic style, capable of playing traditional acoustic music or an updated version dominated by electric instruments depending on the demands of the audience, and eventually, their music evolved into a distinctive brand of conjunto. In 1990, after several siblings left the band, el Grupo Internacional was reworked into the Hometown Boys, featuring Roman Martinez, Sr. on bajo sexto, Ricky Martinez on bass guitar and lead vocals, Joe Martinez on accordion and backing vocals, Jesse Martinez on drums, and Roman Martinez, Jr. on percussion and live sound. Within a year of forming, the Hometown Boys had become popular enough to land a record deal with EMI Music, and their debut album, El Poder de una Mujer, appeared in 1991. After five successful albums for EMI, the Hometown Boys struck a new deal with Fonovisa; their first album for the label was 1995’s Luces de Nueva York, and their second, Mire Amigo, went gold after only a week in release, solidifying their reputation as one of conjunto’s most popular acts. In 1996, the Hometown Boys had the honor of being the first Hispanic act inducted into the Lubbock Music Walk of Fame, and in 1997, the tune “Joe’s Special 10” was named Best Instrumental at the 1997 Tejano Music Awards. However, 1997 also saw Roman Martinez, Jr. die unexpectedly at the age of 45. Joe Martinez suffered a heart attack not long after Roman, Jr.’s death, and he died after a performance in January 1998, only 34 years old. In 2002, an aneurysm claimed Jesse Martinez’s life, also at age 34. Maria Dolores Martinez, the group’s matriarch, succumbed to lingering illness in 2007. That same year, Ricky Martinez also passed after a period of ill health. Despite struggling with tragedy after tragedy, Roman Martinez, Sr. kept the group together, still playing bajo sexto and recruiting other family members and like-minded musicians to keep the lineup together. The group continued to enjoy the support of their fans in the Lone Star State, who nicknamed the group “the Homies.” The band’s lineup in 2017 included Elias Aredondo as lead singer, Rosalinda Martinez, and Marky Lee Riojas as backing vocalists, Anthony Trevinio on accordion, Bobby Martinez on bass, and Ruben Rodriguez on drums, as well as Roman Martinez, Sr. As always, the Hometown Boys maintained a busy recording and performing schedule, and in 2017 they issued a concert album, Un Grito! Live, Vol. 1.
